Rhys stands alone in California for their sublime, balanced, complex and savory wines made from estate vineyards high above the fog line in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA. Founder and Silicon Valley entrepreneur Kevin Harvey has spent his millions of dollars for Greated Good; seeking out terroir in the wild mountains of the central California Pacific Coast most akin to the Grand Cru vineyards of Burgundy and the finest slopes of the Northern Rhone Valley. The vineyards are biodynamic and organically cultivated; the grapes are foot-trodden; the wine spontaneously fermented and elevated in seasoned French oak barrels. The 2013 Horseshoe Vineyard Syrah is reminiscent of a focused Cornas. Smoke, pepper and sultry earth intermix in a sultry display before the unmistakable California fruit builds to an imposing crescendo.
